I have evaluated several application launchers over the years, notably Synapse written in Vala, to which I previously contributed by developing the Zeal doc extension.
Recently, I started using Ulauncher, built with Python: it is responsive, clean, and well architected. Its extensions ecosystem and documentation leverage GitHub infrastructure seamlessly.
Kudos to the author for such clean design.
A few features could still be improved: full UI internationalization across extensions remains somewhat limited, and plugin configuration screens do not yet support localization.
I decided to adopt Ulauncher and ported my Zeal doc extension to it.
Installation is simple: just copy-paste the GitHub repository URL into Ulauncher's extension settings.
Give it a try if you are on Linux:
